La Serra sorge lungo la facciata ovest del Castello. In corrispondenza dell’accesso centrale, un piccolo rondò indica la prospettiva ideale per cogliere, insieme, l’orizzontalità austera della Serra, con le sue arcate neogotiche, e la verticalità morbida della Torre Rotonda.
Dopo anni di degrado in cui la Serra, a partire dagli anni Settanta del secolo scorso, era stata trasformata persino in una mensa, il restauro nel 2010 ha restituito a questo luogo il fascino originario. All’interno, il Ficus repens abbraccia la volta dando vita a curiosi disegni.
Lungo il sentiero verso la Corte Nobile è possibile osservare un bellissimo esemplare di Lagerstroemia indica o Lillà delle Indie, anche chiamato “Albero nudo” per la sua corteccia chiara, liscia e sottilissima.
The greenhouse runs along the western facade of the castle. Lining up with the central entrance, the small courtyard offers the perfect vantage point to appreciate the contrast between the austere horizontality of the greenhouse, with its neo-Gothic arches, and the softer verticality of the Round Tower.
After decades of neglect and repurposing for various uses, including as a canteen in the 1970s, the greenhouse today stands in all its former glory, thanks to restoration work completed in 2010. Inside, the Ficus repens has climbed to the vaults, creating curious shapes and designs.
A point of interest along the path back to the Noble Courtyard is the stunning Lagerstroemia indica, also known as the lilac of the south or, more commonly, the crepe myrtle, for its smooth and thin, light-colored bark.
